What’s the difference between a Registered Dietitian and a Nutritionist?

A Registered Dietitian is a protected title under the Health Professionals act of BC since 2002. A Registered Dietitian must undergo rigorous training with at least a 4-years undergraduate degree from an accredited university, as well as 10 months of unpaid practice education, which provides work experience in various fields of dietetics. RDs are also Nutritionists.

Nutritionist can be used as a protected title in certain provinces (e.g., Alberta, Quebec, Nova Scotia). Otherwise, in other provinces, anyone can be called a nutritionist.

Will my insurance cover the costs of seeing a Registered Dietitian?

According to Dietitians of Canada, seven out of ten major insurers in Canada will provide dietitian services coverage. Please check with your insurance plan as each plan may vary.

Is direct billing an option with extended health insurance providers?
